What does Central Park mean to Marco?

Although he only lived for some days in the Central Park, it’s an important part of his life. After he lost his appartment he found protection in the park. He liked living there because he could live alone there with nobody else and in the streets he never could been alone. Here he could do what he want without disturbing others. In the nature the people are very friendly to him, some gave him money, others something to eat, so that he had not great problems to live there. Only as it started to rain, he had problems, because his clothes get wet and he started to being ill, so that he began to haluscinate but he had luck, that he was rescued by his friends Zimmer and Kitty Wu. In the time when Marco lives in the Central Park he learned for himself about the important things in life.

In the eigth chapter of Bill Brysons “Notes from A Big Country” which is called “Friendly People” the narrator talks about his enthusiasm of the friendly and helpful fellow citizens of America.

First of all he describes the friendly reception of their family in the neighbourhood and the help of the neighbours in the time as they have no furniture.

At least he explains that there is no crime, so that the Americans leave their houses or cars, although they have not locked the doors.

Reasons therefore are that there is no market for stolen things and that the police would shoot the thief.

Bill Bryson: Notes from a Big Country- How to Have Fun at Home

The third chapter „How to Have Fun at Home“ of Bill Brysons „Notes from a Big Country“ is about Brysons comparison of the living standard in America and Great Britain.

His wife is impressed by the conveniences in America, but he is critical with regard to them. In his opinion some of the things are helpful, but most of them are unnecessary.

One of these useful things is the garbage disposal which he never wants to miss again, because on the one hand it is very helpful and on the other hand it is entertaining.

A second one is the fireplace ashpit, which is useful, too, and seems to be bottomless.

At last he talks about the basements of the American which are nearly all the same. They are not really used by them. Sometimes when they come down in the basement, they think about what to do with all the space, but later they never do.
